It didn’t take long for tight end Martellus Bennett to develop a chip on his shoulder. The New York Giants lone big free agent acquisition this offseason has told the media there is no love between him and the Dallas Cowboys, the team that drafted him in the second round of the 2008 NFL Draft. When asked about playing his former team Bennett said, “I just want to kick those guys’ asses. That is what it is all about. I mean we are cool but we ain’t that cool, know what I am saying? I kind of got some ill feelings towards them overall. It is a game, I kind of hate everybody, honestly, in the NFL.”
Bennett has not been shy when it comes to talking to the media this offseason. He seems to revel in the spotlight a little and looks like he will be the guy the media runs to, especially before a Giants-Cowboys game to get a juicy quote to fill notebooks all week. Bennett was asked again about his feeling towards the Cowboys and didn’t shy away. “I have ill feelings toward everybody,” Bennett said. “It is not just Dallas. Pretty much anybody who doesn’t play with us, I pretty much don’t like ‘em. I don’t like a lot of people. I am kind of an [censored] but it is cool.”
Bennett served as an understudy of sorts to Cowboys tight end Jason Witten and is eager to show the NFL what he is capable of without living in the shadow of one of the best tight ends in the NFL and maybe in the history of the game. “Who’s better to learn behind than Witten?” Bennett said when asked about his ex-teammate. “He is one of the best to ever do it. I learned a lot from him. Every once in a while, plants can’t really grow when they are out-shaded by the tall tree. So I get a little sunlight for myself now.”
Bennett didn’t stop there. After comparing himself to Gandhi for his ability to search within himself for answers he continued. “For me it was never an issue with playing ability or being able to make plays,” he said. “It really is about being happy and being at peace with myself. I am at peace with myself. I am not at peace with everybody else. I have never been this hungry or this enthused about going to camp.”
Giants fans will have a lot to look forward to if Bennett can practice what he preaches. He seems ready to take on the world and that might be a good sign. “I got everybody’s date marked on my calendar,” he stated. “I am kind of pissed off about a whole lot. So I think it will be a good year for me.”
Welcome to your first training camp as a New York Giants Martellus. It looks like you will enjoy your stay here as there is plenty of sunshine and reporters to help you grow. One thing is for certain, Bennett is taking to the media spotlight like a hibiscus to sunlight. At the very least the week leading up to Giants-Cowboys games should be fun.
