Washington Redskins QB Robert Griffin III, along with the first team, will have 12 to 20 snaps in their first preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. That’s 12-20 chances to give a first impression.
Speaking to reporters Monday, Head Coach Mike Shanahan gave no details on what he expected to see happen other than a good game.
“You want everyone to play well. It’s a collective effort you want everyone to play a perfect game,” he said. “It’s not gonna happen in the first preseason game, but that’s what you’re shooting for.”
Shanahan is playing this right down the middle: Give an expectation that is not achieved and you’ll have to answer those questions too. Well played, well played.
But RG3 is still facing a team that shut out the Redskins last season 23-0. Keep in mind that Tim Hightower, Santana Moss, and Chris Cooley were out due to injuries. Either way the loss was a significant blow to Shanahan, who said afterwards that, “. . . To score no points, I don’t think I’ve ever had that since I’ve been a coach — assistant or head coach, college or professionally. So it’s pretty humbling to take that.”
Do I think Shanahan is taken the preseason game as just a learning curve? I don’t know. I do think for those injured in that shutout last season are looking for some retribution. It’s principle: You’re facing a team that shut you out in front of more than 50,000 fans.
Not cool. Expect everyone to be on deck to get a piece of the action. I know i would be looking for a little bit of revenge–even if it is preseason. The Redskins will face the Bills Thursday at 7 p.m.
