New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham suffered an injury in practice yesterday. Apparently Graham landed awkwardly and injured his hip or back. However, Saints fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the injury does not appear to be that serious. The Saints cannot afford another injury to one of their star players. The Saints are already dealing with injuries to cornerbacks Jabari Greer, Patrick Robinson, and Johnny Patrick. In addition to those injuries wide receivers Adrian Arrington and Nick Toon are also dealing with injuries of their own. With all of the injuries that have occurred losing Graham would be a huge blow to the Saints as they continue to prepare for the start of the regular season.
The Saints are set to play the New England Patriots today in their second preseason game and they will need Graham if they want to win. However, Graham will probably not play too much since it is just a preseason game. It will be fun to watch Graham compete against Patriots’ tight end Rob Gronkowski. Graham and Gronkowsi are arguably the two best tight ends in the NFL right now and you better believe there is a little rivalry there.
There has been no talk of sitting Graham out and I expected him to play at least a few series before the end of the game. Graham is looking to capitalize on last season’s success and should have an even bigger role in the offense with the departure of wide receiver Robert Meachem. Graham will clearly be Drew Brees’s number one target this season and maybe Graham has his eyes on Gronkowski’s tight end receiving record. However, Graham needs to stay healthy as he will carry a huge offensive load this season and he is more than capable of doing that.
