In the first episode of HBO’s Hard Knocks, Chad Johnson claimed that he took last season off so the other wide receivers in the NFL could “catch up” as the wideout recorded just 15 catches for 276 and one touchdown as a member of the New England Patriots. Johnson was hoping to redeem himself as a member of the Miami Dolphins and return to his dominant self, but now–he may never get that chance ever again.
The Dolphins have released Johnson after he was arrested on Saturday for domestic abuse after he head butted his wife–which is ironic considering one would expect the two to still be in their “honeymoon phase” after marrying last month. Even though Johnson was released from jail on Sunday, Miami wasted no time and made the quick decision that it wasn’t worth keeping the veteran wideout around any longer–and why would they want to?
There were many who believed that Johnson was done in the NFL after his release from the Patriots, but the Dolphins were one of a few teams that expressed interest and figured he was at least worth a shot. With a receiving core that was already weak to begin with, the team believed Johnson had the chance to emerge into the team’s No. 1 wideout if he returned to the dominant form from a few years ago when he was a member of the Cincinnati Bengals.
Now, it’s safe to say that the NFL may have seen the last of Johnson considering the list of teams expressing interest was already small to begin with and no team is going to want to bring him on after this latest incident. For a player that was once considered a top wideout in the NFL and always entertaining to watch with his touchdown celebrations, it would be a shame to see Johnson’s career end like this over some bone-headed mistake he made out while enjoying a Saturday night with his wife.
Unfortunately though, Johnson may not have much of a choice anymore. What’s even more depressing about this whole situation–Johnson couldn’t even make it to the second week of the preseason before his release from the team.
If a 34-year-old is this immature now at this stage in his career–the chances of him turning things around aren’t looking good. With the way things played out last year in New England, it seemed like only a short matter of time before Johnson fizzled out of the NFL–it’s just nobody expected his career to possibly come to an end because of a head-butting incident that could have easily been avoided.
