The New York Giants, who were painstakingly thin at the defensive tackle spot today until they signed two players at the position today, may just have their version of Victor Cruz on the defensive side of the ball. Dwayne Hendricks is entering his third year in the league after spending his first two seasons on the practice squad. The undrafted player from the University of Miami has had little opportunity to show what he’s about other than training camp.
Well, last Friday night he put on a show against the Jacksonville Jaguars, registering two sacks. The Giants have had a plethora of injuries to the defensive tackle spot, and Hendricks’ performance was exactly what the coaches needed to see. Chris Canty is still on the PUP list, Shaun Rogers is out for the season with a blood clot in his calf, Marvin Austin is out with a back issue and backup Martin Parker is gone for the year.
Hendricks has been given a serious opportunity to show the coaching staff what he can do with reps on the first and second team. Tom Coughlin was not at all surprised with Hendricks’ performance in the first preseason game.
“Well, he can see that there’s opportunity,” Coughlin said. “He goes a million miles an hour. I have the utmost respect for that kid. That kid works his ever-loving off. As a matter of fact, I use him as an example. If you’re going against him, you better be going full speed or he’s going to make you look bad.”
Hendricks know he “made a name for himself,” but he’s not content with where he is at. He is ready to keep pushing and improving and show the coaching staff why they have kept him around.
“Now I know that people know, so that only has to increase my play level too,” he said. “I know anybody that’s going to line up or watch the film is going to have heard of (Coughlin’s) comment, so I need to pick my game up also. Hopefully now I’ve made a name for myself and I can just continue to build off of that and go in the right direction.”
