The New York Jets may be without their best offensive weapon until the start of the regular season, as wideout Santonio Holmes has been trying to recover from a rib injury suffered in practice earlier this month.
Holmes, (#10, above) was injured on a hit from teammate Antonio Cromartie (#31, above right) on a full-contact play in practice, and the veteran wideout already missed the Jets’ preseason opener.
Now, there is some talk that Holmes may miss the entire preseason, as his bruised ribs aren’t getting any better, or at least not as fast as he or the Jets would’ve hoped.
“Certainly it’s possible,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said, of Holmes possibly sitting out until the Jets’ regular season opener on September 9. “But don’t think that will be the case.”
However, until we see Holmes back on the practice field, it’s becoming a bit of a concern that he may not be able to get in any game reps in the Jets’ new offensive system until September.
As new offensive coordinator Tony Sparano installs the Jets offensive system, starting quarterback Mark Sanchez hasn’t had many of his top receivers to throw to in practice, much less in an actual game situation.
Not only is Holmes banged up and potentially out for the remainder of the preseason, but fellow wideouts Jeremy Kerley and Chaz Schilens haven’t been on the field lately either.
Kerley has been recovering from a slight tear in his hamstring and hasn’t practiced at all in training camp, while Schilens was injured in last week’s loss against the Cincinnati Bengals.
It’s gotten to the point that even Cromartie has been getting reps at receiver, and not just for kicks, either.
Preseason games don’t usually matter much, but for the Jets, it would make a world of difference if their receivers, especially Santonio Holmes, got some in-game reps in the new offense before the Jets do it live on September 9.
That all depends on the recovery of Holmes from that rib injury. He will miss his second straight preseason game this weekend against the New York Giants, and only time will tell what happens next.
