Will the San Diego Chargers carry their preseason success into the regular season?

By Kenny Gardner

The San Diego Chargers won their first two preseason games by knocking off the Green Bay Packers 21-13 and defeating the Dallas Cowboys 28-20. San Diego will face the Minnesota Vikings tomorrow night on the road.

San Diego had a 3-1 record in the 2008 preseason, but finished the regular season with an 8-8 record. I think this was more of a reflection on the absence of Shawn Merriman, who missed 15 games in 2008 after recording 12.5 sacks in 15 games during the 2007 NFL season.

San Diego finished the 2009 preseason with a 2-2 record, then went on to finish the regular season with a 13-3 record. The Chargers were 1-3 in the preseason in 2010 while they finished with a 9-7 record that season. They were 2-2 last preseason and finished the regular season at 8-8.

San Diego’s preseason resembled their regular season start in 2009. As stated earlier, San Diego had a 2-2 record in the preseason in 2009.  The Chargers started their regular season with a 2-2 record that year.

In 2011, the Chargers had a winning record in their first four regular season games for the first time since the 2006 season. San Diego was 3-1 to start the 2011 NFL season, but after improving to 4-1, they went on a six-game losing streak.

San Diego suffered two injuries to a key player and a guy who can make an impact in 2012. Pro Bowl running back Ryan Mathews broke his clavicle against Green Bay and could miss the first two regular season games. Vincent Brown went out with a broken ankle against Dallas and could miss almost half of the regular season.

It would be nice for San Diego to carry their preseason momentum into the regular season and hopefully there will be no more injuries heading into the games that count.
