The New York Giants will face the Chicago Bears tonight in the all-important third preseason game, and it could be a chance for one of the Giants’ young rookies to give us a glimpse at what he can bring to the table this season. David Wilson, the Giants first round pick this year, has been getting the first team reps this season while Ahmad Bradshaw rests with a hand injury. The Giants have ruled Bradshaw out for tonight’s game, meaning Wilson will likely get the start in Bradshaw’s stead.
“Each week I look at it as an opportunity to prove yourself and move up on the depth chart,” Wilson said. “This week, they moved me up tremendously and are giving me a shot, so you definitely want to take advantage of that.”
Wilson leads the Giants with 69 yards on 15 carries this preseason, but most of his time has come with the second and third group. Now, he’ll get an opportunity to prove himself against a top defense.
“I just want to go out there and be productive with the first-team offense and show I deserve more with the first-team offense. I’m a rookie and I’m learning, and the running back protecting the quarterback is a big role. They’re not going to put you out there until they know you know your role and you’ve proven you’re ready.”
Wilson should play well into the second half, finally giving us a bigger sample of what he can do in real game situations.
