Baltimore Ravens Cut Kicker Billy Cundiff
Billy Cundiff was just one short field goal away from giving the Baltimore Ravens an overtime chance at a Super Bowl berth. Instead, Cundiff shanked the kick and the Ravens went home. Sunday, the Ravens did the same to Cundiff as they cut the kicker.
It is about that time of year when teams start cutting some bigger name veterans and Cundiff was not doing anything to keep his job with the Ravens. He was struggling this year and teams have no need for a guy who isn’t making his kicks.
I expect that Cundiff will land on another team because that is how things work in football. A kicker gets cut and he ends up on a new team in like six weeks. It is just the lifestyle of position. It might not be fair but sometimes a change of scenery can help a guy.
Back to that missed kick in January. It should not have came down to that. If Lee Evans did not have hands of absolute stone, the Ravens would have won the game and possibly the Super Bowl. Instead, they had to bring Cundiff on for a field goal, which is never a sure thing. It was a short field goal, but he just flat out missed it. That might be the defining moment of his career right now.
Cundiff will probably latch on to a new team, which will be great. Every guy needs a chance for redemption.
