The New York Giants have finalized their 53 man roster per the league-wide deadline at 9:00 pm ET. Earlier in the morning they made 15 roster moves and still had seven to make before they got down to the league maximum. A couple of interesting but not too terribly surprising cuts the Giants made earlier in the day were Greg Jones and running back D.J. Ware
Jones was a sixth round pick in 2011, but what makes it even more surprising was the fact that he played in all 16 games last season and even started five. His release likely had quite a bit to do with injuries to other positions, and the fact that the Giants are carrying five defensive ends.
The Giants also brought in Keith Rivers this offseason–who by all accounts–is taking Jones’ spot as a backup outside linebacker, but will see his share of time on the field.
Ware getting cut was not as much of a surprise as Jones, but a lot of people thought Ware still had a chance to make the team based on his knowledge of the offense and pass blocking ability. Clearly the Giants felt Andre Brown and Da’Rel Scott offered more upside, which I agree with. Ware has hit his ceiling, and he wasn’t getting any better.
Some of the big news updates from tonight are the Giants putting Terrell Thomas and Shaun Rogers on season ending injured reserve. Thomas was expected to be able to play this season, but it looks like that won’t be happening.
The final five players cut were Ryan Perrilloux, Dante Hughes, Chris White, Steven Goodwin and Laron Scott, all players who did not figure to make the roster.
You can also bet the Giants are not done making moves. They will most likely use that new IR rule on one of several players to choose from, and Adam Schefter seems to think the Giants are in the market for an offensive lineman.
So don’t expect the Giants to be quiet over the weekend. Check back here for updates on any potential rumors or updates!
