Today is the day the Atlanta Falcons make their roster cuts, along with the rest of the NFL, in order to bring the roster down to the mandatory 53 men. Like most teams, there were bound to be a few surprises, and the Falcons certainly had a few unexpected cuts.
Most of the position battles within the team were more for who would start, rather than who would be cut from the team. But with an overstock of defensive backs, running backs, and tight ends and wide receivers, there were bound to be some casualties at the skill positions.
There are some early unofficial and unconfirmed reports being tweeted out from sources and from the players themselves
Among those reported to have been cut are CB Dominique Franks, OLB Spencer Adkins, TE LaMark Brown, C Tyler Horn, DT Conrad Obi, LB Pat Schiller, and RB James Rodgers.
Among this list, the biggest surprise is probably CB/PR Dominique Franks. Franks had been playing backup corner for the team since 2010, and although it never seemed like he was going to develop into a starter at defensive back, he was the favorite throughout training camp and the preseason to win the Falcons punt returner job, which was opened up when free agent Eric Weems left for the Chicago Bears.
Undoubtedly, the Falcons will try to sneak some of these players through waivers, and bring them back for the practice squad, which can be announced on Sept.1. Safe bet that James Rodgers falls into that category if indeed he has been waived.
