The Houston Texans signed G Cody White to the practice squad on Monday, filling the last spot on the eight man practice squad. White is an undrafted rookie out of Illinois St. He was with the Texans through training camp and the preseason before being waived in the final round of roster cuts this past Friday.
White joins the practice squad along with QB Case Keenum, RB Jonathan Grimes, TE Phillip Supernaw, WR Jeff Maehl, DE David Hunter, OLB Delano Johnson, and FS Eddie Pleasant. All of the aforementioned players have been with the team through OTAs, training camp and the preseason.
While they all start the season on the practice squad, don’t be surprised if you see one or more of these names on the active roster at some point during the regular season. With the team carrying only 4 safeties, there is a good chance that Pleasant will see the active roster before the season is over. Last year, five players on the practice squad, including Maehl, were called up to the active roster due to injuries. With the exception of Maehl, who is in his 2nd year, all of the members of the practice squad are in their rookie seasons.
The player to watch may be Grimes, another undrafted player out of William & Mary. Grimes had a nice preseason but with the veteran trio of Arian Foster, Ben Tate, and Justin Forsett at running back, he was relegated to starting the season on the practice squad. Grimes showed the potential to be an effective runner in the Texans’ zone blocking offensive scheme. He would no doubt like to follow the path of another undrafted running back who started his NFL career on the practice squad before getting his chance to play, and then rising to prominence. That guy’s name was Arian Foster, and he didn’t turn out to be half bad.
