New Orleans Saints Select 2012 Team Captains

The New Orleans Saints announced the players chosen to serve as team captains of the 2012 season. Quarterback Drew Brees and offensive tackle Zach Strief will serve as the offensive team captains of the Saints. Furthermore, safeties Roman Harper and Malcolm Jenkins will be the defensive team captains. Wide receiver Courtney Roby will be the special teams captain for the second season in a row.

All of the players were very humbled by their selections to team captains and all have vowed that they will not take it for granted. I think being selected is a big deal and it really shows how much your teammates think of you and I think the Saints did a great job in picking their captains.

I do not think there were any surprises for the team captains but Brees was obviously a no-brainer. Brees is the leader of the Saints and as he goes so do the Saints.

Strief joins Brees as the team’s other offensive captain. Strief will serve as the Saints’ starting right tackle and I am sure he is up to the job. Strief is part of a great offensive line and it is nice to see an offensive lineman selected as team captain since the Saints’ award-winning offensive line will protect Brees.

There are two new faces to the defensive captains in Harper and Jenkins. Harper and Jenkins will replace last season’s defensive captains, middle linebacker Jonathan Vilma and defensive end Will Smith. Vilma and Smith will serve suspensions for their role in the Saints’ alleged bounty scandal.

Harper and Jenkins will be the veteran leaders of a young Saints’ secondary and a defense going through a makeover. With Harper and Jenkins leading the defense the Saints should have some continuity and improvement in that area.

Roby will lead the special teams for the second season in a row and he is definitely up to the challenge. Roby is one of the hardest working players on the Saints and is very deserving of the captain selection.

Now that the Saints have selected their captains they seem to be getting back into the groove of things. The Saints are definitely ready for the season to start and put the off-season turmoil behind them.

The Saints open the regular season on Sunday, September 9th at home against the Washington Redskins.
