The San Diego Chargers signed former New Orleans Saints wide receiver Robert Meachem to a four year deal worth $25.9 million on March 13, 2012. Meachem’s average salary ranks fourth among all of the players on San Diego’s roster.
San Diego signed Meachem to this deal on the same day that former Chargers WR Vincent Jackson signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Jackson led San Diego in receiving yards and touchdown receptions in 2009 and 2011, so Meachem has huge shoes to fill.
According to Pro Football Focus, Meachem had just two red zone targets during the 2011 NFL season with New Orleans.
New Orleans had Jimmy Graham last season and he was tied with former Dallas Cowboys WR Laurent Robinson for fourth in the NFL with 11 TD receptions. Marques Colston missed two games last season, but was tied for 11th with nine players in TD receptions with eight.
Lance Moore missed two games last season as well for New Orleans, but was also tied for 11th in the NFL with eight TD receptions. Meachem had six TD receptions, but may have been the forgotten man in the red zone, or he could not break away from coverage.
I think that Meachem will see more targets in 2012 because while Antonio Gates was first or second in receptions and TD receptions on San Diego from 2004-2011, he missed six games in 2010 and three games in 2011.
Malcom Floyd was second on San Diego in receiving yards in 2010 and 2011 while he was third in TD receptions last year. Meachem will be a starter in 2012 which he only did 25 times in 62 games with New Orleans.
Meachem only missed two games from 2008-2011, so injuries could happen again to Gates and Floyd, Meachem will be a starter and this could led to more red zone targets.
