The New York Giants spent their first round pick on running back David Wilson. Wilson showed some flashes of possibly being a dynamic playmaker out of the backfield. Wilson led the team in rushing with 131 yards and added 61 yards on five catches.
Then the season opener came. Wilson had two carries for four yards and a momentum changing fumble. He was not seen from again, except when the cameras showed him standing on the sidelines. Could we see more of Wilson this week?
Ahmad Bradshaw needs a partner in the backfield. The way football is now, unless you have a Ray Rice or Adrian Peterson, you need another running back to go with your starter, maybe even two. That’s just the way the league is. Bradshaw has a history of injury problems and the Giants need to keep him as fresh as possible.
The Giants aren’t going to give up on David Wilson, especially after the first game. Wilson had fumbling problems in college. You know who else had fumbling problems? Tiki Barber. Tom Coughlin came in and changed how Tiki carried the ball and that helped get rid of his fumbling problems.
Apparently Wilson has responded well in practice this week, which is a good sign. It’s good that Wilson is responding well from adversity. Rookies are going to be tested in the NFL all the time and this is going to be his first test. Whether he passes or fails is going to show a lot about what kind of character he has.
