NFL Rumors: Daniel Thomas OUT, Lamar Miller IN for Miami Dolphins

By Craig Ballard

From the NFL Rumors files…Word out of Miami is that 2nd year running back Daniel Thomas is OUT this week vs the Oakland Raiders. That would open the door for rookie RB Lamar Miller to make his Dolphins debut.

Deja vu for Thomas. His rookie campaign of 2011 started promisingly, only to be derailed by injury. In week 1 loss to the Houston Texans Thomas was decent on the ground, he also made a nice 32 yard pass play. On his final carry he was popped and suffered a concussion (reportedly). The word is that Thomas passed the concussion tests this week, but was still held out of practice and he is rumored to sit and rest this week vs the Raiders.

In a 2011 victory over the Raiders Thomas had his best game post-Week 3 injury. He went for 73 yards on 13 carries which is a gaudy 5.6 yards per carry. He also broke off a (then) career high 21-yard run in that game.

For the short yard plays that would usually feature Thomas I would anticipate Jorvorskie Lane getting his chance to convert those scenarios. Lane could also lead-block for Lamar Miller who could get some playing time this week.

If the rumor is accurate that would mean that Miller will make his NFL debut. Miller was inactive in week 1, but he is a home run hitter who is anxious to show he can contribute on the NFL level. Miller has speed, elusiveness, and can catch out of the backfield too. He has the potential to one day be an every-down RB with his combination of speed and tough to tackle (fights for extra yards…not afraid of the physical runs between the offensive tackles). Miller plays through pain too.

As the season progresses I would like to see Miller get a few plays as a slot-WR. His skill-set can beat a linebacker in a one-on-one scenario. Will we see that as soon as this week? I would think that is unlikely, but it does sound like there could be an opportunity for playing time this week for Miller.

I like Miami’s chances vs the Raiders. As much as it is disappointing that Thomas is unlikely to play, it is exciting to see Miller make his debut (Miller was born and raised in Miami, and played his high school and college ball in Miami)
