Is Week 1 or Week 2 the Real Green Bay Packers Defense?
Jeff Hanisch- US PRESSWIRE
The NFL season is two weeks in for the Green Bay Packers and so far they have had two different performances from their defense. In week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers, the Packers had trouble getting any type of pass rush on Alex Smith and had multiple blown coverages throughout the game. In Week 2 against the Chicago Bears, the Packers looked like an All-Pro defense. They intercepted Jay Cutler four times along with sacking him seven times. So the question now is, which Packers defense are we more likely to see for the rest of the season?
After the Week 1 game against the 49ers was over, there was some concern from people outside of the Packers locker room. The defense looked the same as last year and everyone was jumping to conclusions about the Packers being in trouble. However, there wasn’t too much thought put into the fact that the 49ers are just a great team. Last year they were in the NFC Championship game and took the New York Giants into overtime before losing the game. They returned most of their starters and added important pieces to their offense over the offseason.
However, it is in the nature of football fans and experts everywhere to judge a team after one week of play. For the Packers, they proved their critics wrong with their performance against the Bears on Thursday night. Cutler was constantly pressured which was led by Clay Matthews who had 3.5 sacks for the night.
What was seen against the Bears is the defense fans should expect to see for the rest of the season. The Packers are a play-making defense which led the league in interceptions last season with 31. So it is nothing new that they were able to pick-off the wild Cutler four times in their victory. Also, the Bears have a weak offensive line which played right into the hands of Green Bay who is still trying to establish a great pass rush.
Bottom line, the Packers defense has improved. The 49ers are an elite team this season and it will be hard for any team to contain them. With the addition of Nick Perry and Jerel Worthy on the defensive line, the pass rush will continue it’s success for the rest of the season. The 49ers are a conservative team on offense and with the Packers aggressive style of defense it is hard for them to stop that kind of offense. Most teams spread the field more and take more shots across the middle or down the field which will play right into the hands of the Packers.
This season should be a great one for the Packers and the defense should do nothing but improve as the season progresses. As the young rookies get adjusted to playing the NFL there will be a better chemistry with the team and along with the chemistry will provide better play on the field.
