Mike McCarthy’s Aggressive Play-Calling Is What Green Bay Packers Need
Jake Roth- US PRESSWIRE
Mike McCarthy has established himself as one of the best head coaches in the NFL in his short time in the league. When McCarthy was announced to be the coach of the Green Bay Packers in 2006, many eyebrows were raised at the choice they had made. However, McCarthy has already won a Super Bowl with Green Bay and is a rare breed of head coaches who calls plays for the offense.
On Thursday night against the Chicago Bears, McCarthy had one of the most aggressive play calls any coach can make. He was facing a 4th and 26 and made the gutsy call of running a fake field. The play worked to perfection as it led to a 27-yard touchdown to put the Packers up 10-0. If the play didn’t work, most likely the play call would have been viewed as risky and stupid. But here is why McCarthy thought it was the perfect time to call this play.
It was close to the end of the half and the offense had virtually no success. McCarthy knew his offense needed a spark offensively and this would send the perfect message to his team that they needed to step up their game. Also, with only about one minute left on the clock, McCarthy knew that if this play didn’t work that the defense would most likely be able to hold their ground considering how they performed for the entire first half.
So the bottom line is that McCarthy had no question this was the absolute perfect time to gamble.
“I would say I’m a conservative person, but when you play the game of football, or you call a game, you have to be able to be aggressive,” McCarthy said. “That was a big-play opportunity that we felt if we got the look, we had a chance to execute it. I would have preferred a better down and distance, no doubt.”
McCarthy has always had an aggressive philosophy and it fits right into the way the Packers play. Even when the Packers are up late in games, McCarthy keeps the pedal down and continues with the passing attack. Against the Bears that almost backfired after Aaron Rodgers threw an interception late in the game with Green Bay still throwing the ball with the lead. For the most part though it is great for the Packers to continue with their game plan until the game is out of reach.
For the future fans can expect more aggressive play-calling by McCarthy no matter what the situation is. There will be times that his aggressiveness doesn’t work, but fans can’t complain as for the most part it works and you have to take the bad along with the good. McCarthy has proven to be one of the best coaches in the league and his play-calling can’t be questioned.
