It has been a tough start for the New Orleans Saints this season. The Saints dropped to 0-3 after losing in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Saints’ defense was missing in action as the Saints blew a big lead and gave up 18 second half points.
The game went into overtime and the Saints lost to the Chiefs 27-24 on a 31-yard field goal by Chiefs kicker, Ryan Succop. Many people felt this was a game that the Saints should have won but for the third week in a row the Saints came up short.
Furthermore, the Saints defense could not execute down the stretch and let the Chiefs offense back in the game. The Saints’ defense gave up 510 yards of offense from the Chiefs and this proved to be the difference in the game. Also, the Saints gave up many big plays including a 91-yard rushing touchdown from Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles in the third quarter.
The Saints’ offense on the other hand was able to put up points early on in the game and quarterback Drew Brees even threw for three touchdowns. However, Brees and the offense could not recover from the poor showing of the defense.
I feel like three games into the season the defense should start jelling and the players should be familiar with Steve Spagnuolo’s system. The defense gave up two fourth down conversions from the Chiefs and missed some great opportunities. It seemed that the defense had the game under control in the beginning but as the game went on the Chiefs slowly chipped away at the lead.
The Saints’ defense continued to allow the Chiefs to get into good field goal range as the Chiefs made a franchise-record six field goals. If you were to tell me that Brees throws for three touchdowns and Matt Cassel does not throw for any touchdowns I would say that the Saints would have won in a blowout fashion.
However, Chiefs kicker Succop was the difference maker for the Chiefs as the team took advantage of the poor showing by the Saints’ defense. I think if the Saints defense continues to play like they did today the Saints will be in for a long season. What is so frustrating about the Saints’ three defeats is that they have all been close games and they were all winnable games for the Saints.
As great as the Saints’ offense is it is their defense that it costing them these close games. The Saints’ defense needs to start making some big plays in the coming weeks and try to save the season for the Saints.
Perhaps Spagnuolo needs to take more chances on the defensive end so the Saints will have more opportunities to make big plays on defense. The Saints are in a big hole to start the season but it is not impossible for them to comeback. However, the Saints are still looking for their first win of the season and next week they will face Aaron Rogers and the Green Bay Packers.
The week four game against the Packers will be the biggest game of the Saints season so far and they are big underdogs. If the Saints can beat the Packers it will show that they still have a lot of life in them. Spagnuolo will have to get the defense prepared to face the Packers and if the defense can finally give the Saints something I know the offense will take care of the rest.
Things are looking bleak right now for the Saints and they are against the ropes at the moment. However, a team with against the ropes can prove to be very relentless and hungry for a win. The Saints can win this game but it will come down to their attitude and fight as they try to avoid falling to 0-4.
