Percy Harvin has established himself as the Vikings top receiver, which isn’t saying much, considering the lack of talent surrounding quarterback Christian Ponder.
Nevertheless, Harvin is a talent that must be accounted for, and that’s why I envision Carlos Rogers receiving this matchup.
Rogers is a solid corner on the outside, but defensive coordinator Vic Fangio loves to move the veteran around, depending on matchups.
We saw Rogers take on Victor Cruz in the slot during the NFC Championship game last season.
He extends his solid performance into this season, after a great outing against Greg Jennings in the 49ers Week 1 victory over the Green Bay Packers.
Harvin might not be as technically sound as Jennings but he his big play ability. Rogers will have his hands full but I think the veteran can handle the challenge.
In order to shake coverage, I can see the Vikings moving Harvin around. This may be a good idea.
Of course, this 49ers secondary is as sound as any unit in the league.
Tarell Brown and Chris Culliver, the 49ers other prominent defensive backs, are sensational cover corners.
Culliver is probably the most physically gifted defensive back on the 49ers roster, and could see some time against Harvin.
Perrish Cox may see some action as well. As you’ve noticed, this 49ers defense is one of the deeper units in the league.
Whether they move Harvin around or not, he’ll likely play most his of snaps in the slot, which should pit him against Carlos Rogers.
This should be one of the more exciting matchups to watch.
