Cleveland Browns: Captain Cleveland Saves the Day!

Look very hard towards the first row in the southeast corner of the stadium and you will see a man dressed in a super hero mask and garment aggressively waving an orange and brown shield pumping up the Cleveland Browns faithful. His name is Captain Cleveland. With Marvel’s Avengers just released on DVD, I figured I would “grille” Cleveland’s own Avenger on why he bleeds brown and orange, how he came up with the idea, and other interesting topics.

Me: How long have you been a fan and what inspired Captain Cleveland?

CC: Since I was 5 years old, so around 35 years. I was inspired when Lebron James left town. Everyone was hurting. I wanted to think of something cool for myself and the fans to put a smile back on their face. Something to be a symbol of hope. Captain Cleveland stands for community, character, and commitment. The players will always leave us, but the fans will always stay together.

Me: How do you feel when the Browns lose week in and week out for pretty much the last 13 years?

CC: Mind boggled and extremely depressed. I take it very personal and feel like I’m the one that’s losing.

Me: What do you do to fire up the fans in your section?

CC: I take my shield to the middle of the aisle and wave it. That gets them fired up! It gives me the chills when the fans follow my lead and roar with me. I used to be more animated but I love meeting the fans and they love taking pictures with me. I especially love the kids there, they look up to me.

Me: What is your most memorable Cleveland Browns experience?

CC: This past summer helping out with the youth camp at the Browns training facility in Berea. I got to meet all the new rookie players and was given a tour of the locker room. I enjoyed meeting the kids and putting smiles on their faces.

Me: Even though we are 0-3 to start the season, do you think our luck is finally turning around?

CC: It is with the new ownership coming. It’s a great sign for fans to have an owner that actually cares. There is better talent too.

The one thing that no one will ever be able to take away from the Browns fans is their commitment and loyalty. Win, lose, or draw, they will always follow. It’s more than you can say for fans that root for other teams east of Cleveland, not mentioning any names. Like Captain Cleveland, many fans feel that Jimmy Haslam is a great thing. We can only hope he’s right. Let’s go surprise the world tonight and win! To use the famous line from Captain Cleveland, “Stay Hungry My Friends!”
