One of the most surprising headlines so far in the NFL is the Green Bay Packers starting the season at 1-2. Yes, the Packers had a win taken away from them in Seattle, but the game counts as a loss and everyone has to move on from it. Moving on means getting ready to face the New Orleans Saints who have started out this season 0-3 and this game is a definite must win for them. But is this a must-win for the Packers?
Starting the season 1-3 and making the playoffs is a tough task, even for a great team like the Packers. What would make a playoff run even harder is the fact that currently every team in their division has a winning record. It will be hard to pass all three teams and win the division which means they might have to rely on the wild card.
Obviously this is all speculation about how the other teams will perform, so let’s assume the Packers lose this weekend and fall to 1-3, let’s take a look at who will they have to face for the rest of the season. The next four weeks has three very winnable games for the Packers, going up against the Indianapolis Colts, St. Louis Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars. All of those teams are still trying to find the right chemistry with no players or lack the skill set to compete with the Packers for four quarters. After those games, the Packers will have eight games left, seven of which are teams who currently have winning records.
The schedule doesn’t look too promising for the Packers, but with all that said, this is still not a must-win game for the Packers. What would separate the Packers from other teams that started 1-3 is that the Packers have the talent to go on a huge run to end the season. Remember, this is virtually the same team that went 15-1 in the regular season. The defense looks different compared to last year, but it’s better. The offense is currently what’s struggling and that won’t last the entire season. Coach Mike McCarthy will make the necessary adjustments needed to make the Packers a high-powered offense once again.
So while this game is an important game to win so the Packers don’t fall in a big hole, it is not a must-win game. They have the team and the time to be able to come back from a 1-3 start, if it happens, and make a run into the playoffs.
