The San Diego Chargers made an official announcement hours ago that the team’s current kicker is out for Sunday’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs and that the team has signed Nick Novak to a team contract.
Kicker Nate Kaeding has been ruled out of Sunday’s game in Kansas City due to a groin injury. Novak, went to Kansas City to discuss the contract with the team.
After Kaeding suffered a knee injury in the 2011 season opener, Novak spent the final 15 games with the Chargers and connected on 27 of 34 field goal attempts in the final 15 games after the teams main kicker Kaeding injured one of his knee’s in the teams season opener. Both spent training camp together, but he was released on the final cut prior to the start of this season.
Because the Chargers signed kicker Nick Novak to the full roster, they had to make cuts in the teams 52 man roster and in the process released offensive lineman Reggie Wells. This, is the third time that the team has released Wells and his returns relates to if Jared Gaither will return to the team soon. If Gaither can return Wells, may not return.
The Chargers are suffering from injuries all over the depth chart and currently only have three healthy corners on the roster and will likely sign again before the game on Sunday against the Chiefs.
