Santonio Holmes vs. Buffalo Bills

As the Buffalo Bills are desperately trying to stay in contention for their first playoff appearance, it appears the road ahead is a little less dark this week. The New York Jets announced that wide receiver Santonio Holmes will be out for the rest of the season due to an injury to his foot. His diagnosis is a Lisfranic foot injury, meaning basically that a bone was displaced. Since Holmes is out for the remainder of the season, many are assuming he will undergo surgery.

Holmes has been able to put up decent numbers against the Bills. In the last three games, he had 119 yard receiving and two touchdowns.  This year, Holmes was the Jets’ primary receiver and a loss to another vital starter could be the final straw for an already struggling Jets team.

Teams facing the Jets will be game planning against Jeremy Kerley, Chaz Schilens, newly signed receiver Jason Hill and tight end Dustin Keller, not to mention a struggling quarterback in Mark Sanchez and a usually quiet running game. It is hard to see the Jets bounce back from this tough loss.

The Bills will not have to play the Jets until the last game of the season, and if analysts predicted correctly, it could possibly be a playoff match. Going up against a weaker team could help the Bills avoid the disaster that took place in week one. As far as the Jets, the rest of the season doesn’t prove to be getting any easier as they face three tough teams.

Their next three games, coming off a stomping from the San Francisco 49ers, are against the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, and the New England Patriots. With their offense seemingly weaker at this point, they also will be facing off against a Seattle Seahawks team who play extremely well at home and then the Arizona Cardinals, who have also started off surprisingly well.

The Bills are already struggling against the division, so it is hard not to anticipate how the season is going to play out in the AFC East moving forward.

Are the New York Jets still a contender in the AFC East with the Patriots and the Bills? Has this latest injury put them out of playoff contention?
