With reports earlier in the week that Kansas City Chiefs fans were already calling for the heads of GM Scott Pioli and quarterback Matt Cassel, speculation has increased about whether or not Brady Quinn or Ricky Stanzi will see any time in tomorrow’s game against the Baltimore Ravens. While Quinn’s stats haven’t been overly impressive at this point, he was hardly given a chance with the Cleveland Browns, starting just 10 games. He also has some experience playing in coach Romeo Crennel’s system while Crennel was the head coach in Cleveland.
The last time he faced the Ravens, Cassel was completely manhandled in a divisional playoff game, and the Chiefs lost 30-7. He threw no touchdowns and 3 interceptions, and it’s hard to think that Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, and Haloti Ngata aren’t licking their lips with the thought of another chance to terrorize the struggling quarterback. At 1-3, the Chiefs will be more or less eliminated from playoff contention if they lose another game at this point. The Chiefs will try to pound the ball with Jamaal Charles and Shaun Draughn, but some sort of passing attack will be needed to have a fighting chance in the game.
At this point, Quinn deserves a chance. It may not mean much, but he is familiar with the AFC North as a former starter for the Browns and was a great college quarterback at Notre Dame. He didn’t look great in the preseason, but when your starting quarterback looks as bad as Cassel has so far, it’s time to give the next guy a shot.
