Denver Broncos Lose: Offense and Defense Both Have Questions

Greg M. Cooper-US PRESSWIRE

The Denver Broncos lost to the New England Patriots on Sunday, and there’s no shame in that. However there are some major concerns as the Broncos come home after being blown out in New England. It’s easy to point at the defense and we will get to that in a minute.

Peyton Manning played well based on his stats but the offense is not scoring enough points. The Broncos had four possessions in the first half and moved the ball well, but only scored one time. When you are playing a team like the Patriots, you have to score points. Outside of the win over a bad Oakland Raiders team, the Broncos offense is productive in terms of yards but not in terms of points. In their losses to the Atlanta Falcons and Houston Texans, the offense put up some points late but it wasn’t’ nearly enough.

The offense is getting better overall and they are starting to look more comfortable together, but they have to score points in games like the one versus the Patriots.

On the other side of the ball, a lot of teams are going to struggle with the offense of the Patriots but the Broncos have to be better than they were on Sunday. The Broncos are not a good enough defense to play without pressure on the quarterback, especially one like Brady. Until they get that part of the defense figured out, they are going to give up big plays.

In addition to the lack of a pass rush, the defense of the Broncos continues to struggle on third downs. Brady and the Patriots are going to move the ball, and make plays but you have to make plays on third downs. There were a number of times that the Broncos had the Patriots in third and long situations, and still gave up a first down. The pass rush and third down defense go hand in hand and until they get that corrected, the defense is going to struggle.

The loss to the Patriots, as bad as it was, is not the end of the world. The Denver Broncos have just about survived this opening part of the schedule, and are still right there in the AFC West. They play the San Diego Chargers a week from Monday night, win that and the Broncos are fine. Make no mistake though; the game with the Chargers is huge!
