The 2012 presidential election is less than a month away and sometimes athletes and politics go hand in hand. Politicians love it when a star athlete will go to bat to them to try and sway some votes their way. New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz is throwing his hat into the ring by doing a campaign ad for sitting president Barack Obama.

First of all, no one should have a problem with Cruz doing an ad for a candidate he supports. That’s the great thing about this country. Anyone can voice their opinion about politics or sports. Will it rub some of his teammates the wrong way? It might if they don’t intend to vote for Obama or if they don’t feel like their opinion should be made public.

To me, it’s kind of refreshing for an athlete to go out on a limb and do an ad for a politician. Athletes are very outspoken these days, but its usually about their contract or if they have an issue with someone on another team or something like that. It’s usually not about politics.

Cruz put himself in the spotlight with his famous salsa touchdown dance (which he may not do anymore) and then being a great story from being an undrafted free agent and injured to a top receiver on a Super Bowl winning team.

Now he’s doing what he can to try and get the candidate he believes in re-elected. Maybe what he’s doing can inspire other athletes to do the same thing.

If you are curious you can watch the ad here.
