Honestly, I thought that as a nation of sports fans we were over the whole Michael Vick-dogs situation. I see that it’s new again. After denying he owned a dog, he came out and told the truth. Here’s his statement to the Atlanta Jounral-Constitution about the situation:
“I understand the strong emotions by some people about our family’s decision to care for a pet. As a father, it is important to make sure my children develop a healthy relationship with animals. I want to ensure that my children establish a loving bond and treat all of God’s creatures with kindness and respect. Our pet is well cared for and loved as a member of our family.”
It’s 2012 ladies and gentlemen. Rapists and molesters are able to have be out in public and date. Robbers are allowed to walk in stores and establishments. And people who get traffic violations to any degree are able to have cars again. With that said, it is 100% okay for Mike Vick to have a dog.
I get that some of you may be upset at what he did. I can personally admit that I was furious with the acts that he was convicted of in 2007. I’m a huge dog lover so what he did I took personally, as many across the world did. Newsflash. It is 2012. He’s paid his debt to society by losing his job as a starting quarterback in the NFL. He went bankrupt. Had to serve time in prison away from his family. He took a huge amount of scrutiny that most of us couldn’t deal with if put in his situation. He’s suffered a lot.
Now five years later, he’s been a positive citizen and has been crime free. The only thing criminal act Vick has committed lately has been his play on the field. Now he wants a dog. So what! Why deny his family the opportunity to have pet in the house because of something he did in the past and because of how some of you feel? We live in America; the home of second chances and if anyone deserves a second chance to “prove himself” to the world it’s Vick.
I can’t stop you from being upset if Vick has a dog, but this storyline should be dead. I’m happy for Vick that he’s able to take this step. And you should be too. Remember. Everyone deserves a second chance so lighten up. It’s okay.
