A different opponent, but the same old story for Peyton Manning and his Denver Broncos. The Broncos again came out of the starting gate slow on offense throughout the first half of tonight’s MNF matchup with the San Diego Chargers. The Broncos had two drives, if you want to call them that, in the first quarter that resulted in 8 plays for 19 yards and resulted in two punts.
Then Manning started finding his groove until the drives stalled after 51 yards and a punt, and 69 yards and an interception. The last drive was hindered by Eric Decker catching a pass from Manning in wide open territory, then literally tripping over his own feet. Not the kind of play you want to see when your team is down 10-0.
The Broncos have been making critical mistakes all year, and when you add that trip by Decker to an interception by Manning, it is no wonder this team was down at that point 17-0. But there is one good thing to take from this first half. The Chargers offense, while putting points on the board and extending drives has been helped by the Broncos ineptitude. They really were not running up and down the field like some may have thought, until that last drive before the close of the half.
When are the Broncos going to learn that in the NFL you need to play all four quarters, otherwise it will turn ugly real quick. The most amazing part of this struggle that the Broncos have is that their second halves have been pure magic when charging down the field on their opponents. This season has clearly turned into a tale of two halves and if the Broncos can not get it together tonight, then the Chargers deserve the lead in the AFC West.
Then there is the realization that the second half will be upon the Broncos soon. That is where they do their most damage to opponents. San Diego might want to take heed in the locker room at halftime. The Broncos usually come out firing on all cylinders, and a 24-0 lead at the half might not be enough for the Chargers to win this game.
