Cleveland Browns: May The Odds Never Be in Your Favor
During yesterday’s game against the below average Indianapolis Colts, Cleveland Browns punter/holder Reggie Hodges botched an important extra point attempt that made it even tougher for the Browns to come back later in the game. Instead of being down a pretty much automatic Phil Dawson field goal, Cleveland found themselves down by 4 points late in the game. So just how hard is it to fail an extra point attempt?
Confirming with Stats Inc., last year NFL kickers converted a staggering 99.4% of their extra point attempts. This means that there was less than a 1% chance of Christian Yount snapping the ball to Hodges and Dawson missing the up rights. Yet only this could happen to the mightily struggling Browns as Hodges could not get the ball down for Dawson to even have a shot at converting.
The play happened so quickly that it was forgotten right away. However, in the grand scheme of things, it would serve as another play the Browns could ill afford to make.
It has gotten to a point where this is just plain bad luck. Like a child that has come from a broken family, these are the cards we were dealt as Browns fans and it is getting ridiculous. As a fan of the Dawg Pound, if you’re not deflated by now, you should be. That feeling of something great is happening has flown out the window and is about six blocks down the road now.
The once great defense of Dick Jauron could very well be ranked last in the NFL after tonight’s Monday Night Football match up. Giving up 100 yards rushing to guys like Vick Ballard and Delone Carter is intolerable and pathetic. If Phil Taylor was anchoring the defensive front, would it really be that much better?
Like the post apocalyptic novel “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins, the “odds” are never in our favor. Week after week, the Browns “would of, could of, should of ” all over the field. They are not experienced or deep enough to let game winning or tying plays slip through their grasp. For the rest of the season, a sense of urgency needs to emerge in Berea.
