NFL Rumors: St. Louis Rams Looking to Trade Prior to Deadline
There has been much optimism surrounding the rebuild of the St. Louis Rams during the 2012 season, but it appears that the overhaul is far from complete yet.
Several reports indicate that the Rams are interested in making some trades prior to the deadline in order to further stock up on draft picks. With the aggression already shown by this new regime in the deal to move down in the draft (twice) this April, don’t be surprised if they pull the trigger on a trade or two before the deadline gets here following Week 8.
Of course the player most thought to be on the block is running back Steven Jackson, who was given an opt-out clause in his contract earlier this month. Jackson has fallen out of favor with the coaching staff in St. Louis and given the fact that the team selected two backs that they really like in the draft this past spring (Isaiah Pead, Daryl Richardson), his days are clearly numbered.
What kind of team might actually be interested in taking on a veteran like Jackson for a short-term run?
A team like the New York Jets, who are thin at running back and could use a veteran presence in their backfield with Tim Tebow rising on the depth chart. Also. a divisional team like the Arizona Cardinals makes a lot of sense if they would be willing to part with some draft picks. The Cards are on their fourth or fifth string backs at this point and have been sinking fast without a consistent rushing threat.
Both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers have been ravaged by injuries at running back as well, but they are traditionally stingier with their draft choices. Still, if either club feels as if their championship window may be closing, perhaps a fit of desperation could drive them to deal for Jackson.
The Rams have shown that they want to rebuild via the draft and adding more selections to make that happen would only enhance their chances of success.
General Manger Les Snead and Head Coach Jeff Fisher won’t hesitate if they get the right offer during the course of the next week. These two men have the Rams on the right track to rebuilding and if a deal for Jackson gets done, the timetable only moves further ahead for when this team will be a true contender.
