NFL Rumors: Who Will Replace Chris Gamble?
This is a huge hit to a unit that was already struggling this season. The Panthers are currently ranked 19th in the NFL with 246 yards allowed per game through the air. Losing Gamble, who was the team’s best corner, could only compound the Panthers inability to stop opposing teams through the air.
Right now, the Panthers will turn to Captain Munnerlyn to take over Gamble’s spot while Josh Norman, the rookie from Coastal Carolina who the Panthers selected in the fifth round, will keep his spot as the other starting corner. Josh Thomas will slide into the number three spot vacated by Munnerlyn moving up.
Gamble only started four games this season before injuring his shoulder, an injury that will require surgery for the team’s all-time leader in interceptions.
The Panthers have not announced yet who will be taking Gamble’s spot but if they bring in a defensive back it would have to be a free agent as the Panthers do not currently have a defensive back on their practice squad.
Cletis Gordon, who was with the Panthers last season, is still a free agent. Will Blackmon, who last played with the New York Giants last year, is also a free agent.
Options are limited for the Panthers moving forward, if they even decide to use Gamble’s roster spot on another defensive back. It will be interesting to see what route the Panthers go and if they can replace Gamble’s production.
