NFL Rumors: Dallas Cowboys Linebacker Sean Lee May Be Out For Season

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE

Sometimes you can just be going along with your day, chatting up a follower on twitter about the Dallas Cowboys and you come across news that just ruins everything; and probably the Cowboys season.

Word from Todd Archer of ESPNDallas.com is Cowboys middle linebacker Sean Lee may need toe surgery that would end his 2012 season. In case you haven’t paid attention to how good Lee is, I’ll let you in on a little secret, he’s the Cowboys best defensive player and maybe the best player on the team. Yes, he’s better than DeMarcus Ware. Actually, Lee is one of the top five middle linebackers in football and the Cowboys can ill afford to lose him. On top of all that, Lee is the heart and soul of this Cowboys defense and his presence would be missed.

Lee is the Cowboys defensive leader and also makes the defensive calls, so losing him would be a huge blow. Without Lee, Bruce Carter takes over as the defensive signal caller and fans have to hope Carter continues the same progression that Lee had in his sophomore season because more will be expected from him. Carter has played very well so far but few football players have the instincts and smarts that Lee possesses.

If the Cowboys lose Lee, they also lose their best “takeover” player as well. Lee is always around the football and actually leads the team in interceptions since he’s joined the Cowboys. His ability to be around the ball is second to none on the Cowboys defense and for a team that has issues turning teams over as it stands now, they may have just lost their best play maker. DeMarcus Ware, it’s time for you to step your game up!

The Cowboys signed Dan Conner in off-season as insurance for Bruce Carter but it now appears he’ll likely fill in if Lee is out. Conner is a nice player but doesn’t have the strength or instincts of Lee. The Cowboys also have Alex Albright and Orie Lemon as options to help fill the void. The Cowboys like Albright, an outside linebacker, who can move to the middle if needed.

The Cowboys and their fans everywhere are holding their breath right now in hopes of Lee returning at some point this season. The Dallas Cowboys season may hang on the results of Lee’s MRI.

It doesn’t look good.
