Miami Dolphins defensive-tackle Randy Starks missed practise on Wednesday sending concern throughout ‘Phins Nation. Starks is having a terrific 2012 so far, and the hopes are that there is not some sort of issue (or even worse – reoccurring issue) that may sideline Starks and take him off the wonderful path he has forged in 2012.
Word out of Miami is that his absence on Wednesday was an excused absence. Joe Philbin and crew did not seem overly concerned, and that has me thinking his absence should prove to be temporary. It seems like more of a personal issues, than an injury.
At 6’3″ 310 Starks is a big boy. He does a fantastic job wreaking havoc in the middle of the d-line with fellow d-tackle Paul Soliai. These guys are a major factor in why the Dolphins rush-D has been super effective so far. Miami is yielding just 3.3 yards per carry (#2 in NFL)…78 yards per game (#4)…Opponents have just 3 rushing TDs vs Miami to this point.
Tony McDaniel is a very good back-up, but the ‘Phins surely prefer to have Starks out there as he is playing so well.
Starks does have 3.5 sacks so far this season, but his contribution is usually how much attention he requires up the middle. He can disrupt the pocket on pass plays, and he occupies would-be blockers on run plays allowing his LBs to roam free and make plays.
This is a contract year for Starks so he wants to be out there, and if the rumors are true then the missed practise was excused and not related to an injury.
