Week 8 NFL Picks
Week 8 NFL Picks
In week 8 there are a bunch of very interesting games on the schedule. There are 5 divisional games, including the Monday night contest between the San Francisco 49ers and the Arizona Cardinals in the NFC West. The schedule also has a few nasty rivalry games such as the New York Giants against the Dallas Cowboys, as well as an old AFC West grudge match between the Oakland Raiders and the Kansas City Chiefs. And the New York Jets get set to take on their second consecutive division opponent when the rested Miami Dolphins come to town.
One of the more interesting matchups of the week is on Sunday night when Payton Manning and the Denver Broncos host the New Orleans Saints and Drew Brees. Another fun game to watch will be the annual trip across the pond in London, when the New England Patriots take on the St. Louis Rams. Also the Philadelphia Eagles without defensive coordinator Juan Castillo take on the undefeated Atlanta Falcons. And two of the most storied franchises in the history of the National Football League face off in Pittsburgh, where the Washington Redskins take on the Pittsburgh Steelers.
It’s safe to safe the landscape is set for quite a day of football this Sunday. Then again, isn’t that always the case? So grab your favorite beverage and some buffalo wings because I’m about to pick all the games. Please note they are not to be used for gambling purposes, because we all know how fast Jim Harbaugh can ruin your bets.
Thursday night, the Buccaneers go to Minnesota to battle the Vikings and after a tough loss to the saints last weekend it’s going to be difficult to for the Bucs to keep up with the Vikings. Both teams are very physical but I like Minnesota to win this game. Expect them to run the ball well and shut down the Bucs surprisingly solid new passing offense.
The Carolina Panthers go into this week’s game without their GM and Cam Newton is looking to get back into a positive groove. In Chicago against the Bears is not a way to do that. However, if I know anything about the NFL it’s this, just when you think you’ve got it all down, something surprises you. I like the Panthers to play well but come up short in the end. The Bears are the pick.
In Cleveland the Browns will take on the struggling San Diego Chargers. The Browns don’t know if Trent Richardson is going to play but it may not matter. The Browns haven’t installed much confidence in their team yet and the Chargers are coming off the bye week so I like the Chargers to right the ship and get the win.
The Seattle Seahawks come off a long layoff to play the Detroit Lions, who are coming off a tough game against the Bears. The Lions are still having trouble moving the ball on a consistent basis but their defense has been improved. I like the Seahawks to come out of Detroit with a win because they are the more physical team.
The Green Bay Packers are starting to hit their stride and they host the Jacksonville Jaguars this week without their best player, Maurice Jones-Drew. The Packers offense is catching fire and the Jags defense has no answer to the fire power the Packers and Aaron Rodgers bring. Green Bay wins this game easily.
The New York Jets played a good game in New England last week but fell short in the end and seeing another divisional opponent come to town right now may not be the best thing for the Jets. The Dolphins have been better than anyone thought and they play a physical brand of defense that will keep them in many games. I like Miami coming off of a bye week to get the win.
In Philadelphia, the news Eagles defense is going to get one heck of a test when the undefeated Atlanta Falcons come to town. Both teams are coming off their bye week and should be fresh. The Falcons passing game is one of the best in the league but if the Eagles can find a way to pressure Matt Ryan, they will have a chance to win this game. I like the Falcons because they cause turnovers and Michael Vick turns it over too much. Giving the Falcons offense extra possessions will not work for the Eagles, Atlanta wins.
The Washington Redskins come off a tough loss to play a Steelers team coming off a big win. RGIII has been impressive but now he faces his toughest challenge against a Dick LeBeau defense. It’s a mismatch and the Steelers with put up plenty of points on the ‘Skins defense. I like the Steelers in a fairly easy fashion.
In London the New England Patriots will face a much different St. Louis Rams team than we’ve seen the past few years. They are a tough, physical team who plays hard for 60 minutes. I still like the Pats to get a win pretty handily.
The Indianapolis Colts travel to Tennessee to battle the Titans, who have their spark back. Chris Johnson was great last week and the test is to see if he can do it again this week. If so, then we can officially say he’s back. Their offense is very different with Matt Hasselback at QB and the Titans win this game.
The Dallas Cowboys will welcome their division rivals the Giants to town this weekend and the trash talking has begun. New York is still upset about things said almost three months ago but they failed to do anything about it the first time they played. I think the Giants will get a good effort from the Cowboys, even without their leader on defense Sean Lee. I think the Giants win, what else, a close game. Since that’s all the Cowboys play.
The Chiefs and Raiders renew their rivalry this weekend and both teams have been struggling on offense. The Chiefs are bringing out Brady Quinn to start this game and that should tell you all the things you need to know about the state of the Chiefs offense. Even though the Chiefs are coming off the bye week, I’m taking the Raiders because I don’t believe in Brady Quinn.
On Sunday night, the Broncos welcome Drew Brees to Denver for a shootout. Peyton Manning is rounding into form and the Saints have won two in a row, so it may come down to the final possession or two. The Saints offense still doesn’t have a fully healthy Jimmy Graham and I can’t see their defense stopping Manning or the Broncos run game. Denver wins this game and Manning get revenge on Brees for the Super Bowl. Which, of course, can never happen.
For Monday Night Football, the Cardinals take on the 49ers and I like the Niners defense to beat up the Cardinals offensive line. San Fran has struggled to move the ball consistently but should find some things in this game to help get back into the offensive groove. The Cards play well at home but I still like the Niners to win this game.
