The Atlanta Falcons are off to a great start to the season. They are well ahead of their division opponents in the NFC South, the top team in the NFC and in the mix as a serious Super Bowl contender. Much of the credit goes to Falcons quarterback, Matt Ryan, who is probably the least talked about MVP candidate in the NFL.
Ryan, who is sometimes called “Matty Ice” because of his cool nature in close games and his ability to “ice” games has not led the Falcons to a great start on his own though. It can even be argued that Matt Ryan should share his nickname with one of his teammates. That guy would be Falcons kicker Matt Bryant.
Matt Bryant may be more deserving of the “Matty Ice” moniker than his teammate Ryan. Twice this season Bryant has kicked game winning field goals for the Falcons so they could remain perfect at the start of the season. Given Atlanta’s grind-it-out style of play, the squad will definitely be depending on Bryant’s foot to kick them to victories for the remainder of the season.
Bryant’s numbers are equally as impressive as his ability. He has made 16 of 17 kicks and is perfect on field goals of 50 yards or more. He also is perfect on his extra points.
Special teams have been an area of concern for the Atlanta Falcons, particularly on returns but one thing, head coach Mike Smith has not had to worry about is Matt Bryant doing his job.
