NFL Rumors: Titans TE Jared Cook would be a Great Addition for Bears
Quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates came to tight end Kellen Davis and told him that “We need you here” as the Chicago Bears offense tried to get into the end zone to cut into the Carolina Panthers lead. Quarterback Jay Cutler fired a bullet high over the middle of the field for Davis, who went up and made a catch for the touchdown.
It was a great play by Davis, but plays like that from the tight end position has been a rarity this season. As each week pasts, the case gets stronger for the TE position being a glaring need on offense. Opposing secondaries are bracketing Brandon Marshall with a safety over the top. This where you need the TE to capitalize off the attention Marshall is creating.
As the trade deadline approaches, the Bears have until Thursday to decide if they want to make a move to upgrade the position.
According to Greg Rosenthal of nfl.com, Tennessee Titans TE Jared Cook expressed his frustration with his role in the offense and has requested a trade.
“Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean reports there are indications that Cook has requested a trade ahead of Tuesday’s NFL trading deadline. (Well, it’s Tuesday for now.)
Cook is in the final year of his contract, but we highly doubt the Titans would want to move him. They have not given up on the season at 3-5. If Cook leaves via free agency, they would get a compensatory pick in return. Most importantly, he’s still too valuable to their offense.”
The Titans could shop Cook around the league to see what they can get. It would be wise for general manager Phil Emery to make a call to the Titans front office and see what they want for the talented athletic TE.
Cook would give the Bears a big, fast, and physical presence over the middle that could make secondaries pay for over-compensating to stop Marshall. The Bears could possibly wait until the off-season to make a run at Cook in free agency, but the Bears are trying to make super bowl run this year.
Adding a player like Cook to go along with Cutler, Marshall, Matt Forte and Alshon Jeffery could make the Bears a legit team no one wants to see in the playoffs.
