The Denver Broncos‘ organization knew exactly what they were doing when they signed a 36-year-old veteran WR by the name of Brandon Stokley. Not only does Stokley still run great routes and show sure hands every game, he also stays out of trouble and keeps the younger players on the team grounded as well.
In the Broncos’ 34-14 win over the New Orleans Saints, Stokley’s fellow WRs, Demaryius Thomas and Eric Decker, had a planned celebration ready for their next touchdown, but just when Decker was getting ready to toss the ball up for Thomas to dunk an alley oop, Stokley knocked the ball out of Decker’s hands.
”What did I get? I mean, they were mad at me on the sideline for stopping them,” Stokley said. “It’s tough being a dad sometimes, you know.”
The celebration would have most likely cost the players involved around $25,000 each in fines.
It looks like Stokley is proving to be a great addition to the Broncos’ organization even at the age of 36. There may have been nothing wrong with a little celebration, but it really is not good sportsmanship to have a big celebration after a TD. You should show a little excitement, but anything more than that is too much. Remember the old saying: “act like you have done it before.”
I am sure the Broncos were glad that Stokley stopped Decker and Thomas from completing the excessive celebration and I bet in the long run the two younger players will be thankful as well.
