The Indianapolis Colts defensive unit has struggled a bit lately to get off the field. They’ve been allowing long drives and too easy of first down conversions. They’ve also struggled to force turnovers and get pressure on the quarterback. Credit most of this to the injuries as the team was forced to play guys that they normally wouldn’t.
One thing the injuries have done though is give the Colts depth and allow some of the younger guys some playing time they normally wouldn’t get. Because of that, three milestones can happen on Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.
One is highly likely to happen and that’s safety Antoine Bethea getting his 750th career tackle. Bethea has started in every game since he’s been a member of the Colts as he’s played here his entire seven year career. He will join a rare club with 750 tackles as he’s been a quiet big contributor of the Colts’ defense for the last seven years.
Bethea, has had at least six tackles in every game except one this year with the exception coming in the home loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars. He had 11 tackles last week against the Tennessee Titans which was the third time this season he had 10+ tackles. Expect Bethea to get his 750th career tackle Sunday.
The second milestone that can happen is if linebacker Jerrell Freeman can get one tackle he would have 100 on the season and for his career already. That like Bethea’s milestone is likely to happen. Freeman, has led the team in tackles all seven games this year and only once did he finish with less than 10 tackles. Freeman’s playing time is expected to dip a bit, but that’s not his doing. It’s all because the Colts’ linebacking core is finally getting healthy as Sunday should be the first time all season the Colts will have Robert Mathis, Dwight Freeney, and Pat Angerer all healthy. Freeman likely will still start and it’s almost a guarantee he will get his 100th tackle.
The third and final milestone that can happen Sunday is if linebacker Moises Fokou gets three tackles he will have 100 in his career. This will be the hardest of the three to happen as Fokou’s playing time is going to dip a lot with the addition of Freeney, Mathis, and Angerer being back. Factor in Kavell Conner and Freeman and Fokou now becomes the sixth option. That again isn’t necessarily a bad thing as the Colts’ linebackers now have big time depth. Fokou is capable of playing well and can help is a reserve role.
Fokou has had at least one tackle in every game this year with the exception of last week against the Titans. He only had one the week prior against the Cleveland Browns, so the odds of his getting three all depends on the health of the other guys. His breakout game came against the Green Bay Packers where he had a career high six tackles in a game. If Fokou doesn’t get to 100 on Sunday he will definitely do it at some point this season.
