Who would have thought at the beginning of the season that the Week 9 game featuring the Miami Dolphins taking on the Indianapolis Colts would have huge playoff implications? Who would have thought in Week 9 we would be talking playoff implications?
In reality, the winner of this game could very well make the playoffs. They will be in the drivers seat for one of the wildcard spots at season’s end.
Both teams enter the game 4-3 and tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the final two wildcard spots. It’s shaping up to be a seven to eight team race in the AFC for playoff spots as the conference is horribly down this year. Outside of the before mentioned teams, only the Houston Texans, Baltimore Ravens, New England Patriots, and Denver Broncos even have a winning record as we now enter the second half of the season.
Whoever wins this game Sunday will be a whole game up on the other and own the tiebreaker which could come down to being the biggest factor. Out of the teams behind the Colts and Dolphins, only the San Diego Chargers and Cincinnati Bengals will be any threat. Both of those teams have a fairy difficult schedule left and may play their way out of things.
Looking ahead three weeks, the winner of this game will still hold the one game lead on the final wildcard spot as I foresee both teams going 2-1 during the next three week span starting with Sunday. The Colts should win on Sunday and again on Thursday against the division rival Jacksonville Jaguars. The game after Jacksonville will be tough for the Colts to win as they travel to Foxboro to take on the New England Patriots. I think the Colts go 2-1 during that three game stretch.
The Dolphins travel to Indy on Sunday then take on the Tennessee Titans at home next week and travel to take on the Buffalo Bills on a Thursday night game in Ralph Wilson Stadium. With both the Colts and Dolphins facing tough tasks in Week 11, the winner of the game Sunday is in the driver’s seat.
Who would have thought two teams being led by rookie quarterback’s would be fighting for a playoff spot so late in the season?
