NFL Week #9: Picking the Winners
It is week nine of the NFL season and after this week, it will be the at least the half-way point for every team in the league. There should be some excellent match-ups this weekend and as a result, there will be some games that took some time to really decide who was going to win, which is good for me since I love challenges.
For some teams this could be a making or breaking point for them in the way of a playoff run. Some teams that are virtually out of the playoffs will be trying to play a spoiler to other teams that are on the verge on the playoffs or help out another team.
The match-ups I am looking forward this weekend are: the Pittsburgh Steelers taking on the New York Giants in a battle of 2004 first round draft picks and two-time Super Bowl with Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning respectably. The other match-up is to see if the Atlanta Falcons can remain unbeaten against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football.
That being said there are some games I just don’t want to see because the games could be to steal a phrase, “Bowling Shoe Ugly”. (Thanks Jim Ross) Those games include the Kansas City Chiefs traveling west to take on division rival San Diego Chargers on Thursday Night. Another game that could be a real downer could be when the Arizona Cardinals whom seemingly are in a free fall travel to the frozen tundra at Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers.
The way I showing off which team I think will win will be showing the winning teams' starting quarterback.
I hope you enjoy my picks, but if you don’t that’s great too because agreeing is boring so I heavily encourage discussion either by leaving a comment here or hitting me up on twitter @TheProfessorSD! I hope you have a great day today!
Game 1: Kansas City Chiefs at San Diego Chargers
The Thursday Night Football game for the NFL Network I have a feeling will be a major disappointment game as San Diego had an epic collapse versus the Denver Broncos and Kansas City has stunk up the joint in every game they've played this year, minus the win they had against the New Orleans Saints.
My Pick: San Diego Chargers
Game 2: Arizona Cardinals at Green Bay Packers
Yet another ugly game since I think the Arizona Cardinals hit a jet-wash and are free falling like a ton of bricks after starting the season 4-0 and Green Bay's offense should bounce back if Jordy Nelson plays Sunday. Not to mention John Skeleton is out of his league versus Aaron Rodgers
My Pick: Green Bay Packers
Game 3: Detroit Lions at Jacksonville Jaguars
The next game on the docket is the Detroit Lions going down south to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars, I don't think this game will be pretty either since Jacksonville quarterback Blaine Gabbert is still hurt and they have a very limited at best running game and Matt Stafford still has Calvin Johnson. Not to mention with Gabbert being hurt, defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh is like a shark smelling blood to be kind.
My Pick: Detroit Lions
Game 4: Chicago Bears at Tennessee Titans
The Chicago Bears travel to LP Field to take on the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. I think the Bears defense will be excellent against the Titans offense since they are fifth overall in total defense and first against the run. The titans are nearly at the bottom of each defensive category so Jay Cutler and company should have a field day on the road.
My Pick: Chicago Bears
Game 5: Denver Broncos at Cincinnati Bengals
Game five of the week, the Denver Broncos travel back east to take on the struggling Cincinnati Bengals. Peyton Manning has been returning to form, however it seems like he only shows up in the second half of games, but I think Cincinnati isn't that good.
My Pick: Denver Broncos
Game 6: Carolina Panthers at Washington Redskins
The Carolina Panthers travels to our nation's capital to take on the Washington Redskins for a battle of the new generation of quarterbacks between Cam Newton and Robert Griffin III. This could be quietly a great game, but I think Washington has the upper hand with a better defense.
My Pick: Washington Redskins
Game 7: Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns
I have a feeling the game between the Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns could be a train wreck despite all the injuries to the Ravens defense. I still think Ray Rice and the rest of the Ravens offense can steam roll Cleveland despite that Cleveland is emerging to be a decent team.
My Pick: Baltimore Ravens
Game 8: Miami Dolphins at Indianapolis Colts
In game eight of the week nine docket, the Miami Dolphins travel to the Midwest to take on the Indianapolis Colts. Miami is coming off an impressive domination of the New York Jets in the New Meadowlands. This is might be a battle of rookie quarterbacks as well between #1 overall pick Andrew Luck and #9 overall in Ryan Tannehill. Despite the lookings of a star quarterback in Andrew Luck, Miami's defense has been ferocious this year.
My Pick: Miami Dolphins
Game 9: Buffalo Bills at Houston Texans
The next game has the Buffalo Bills travel deep in the heart of Texas to take on the Houston Texans at Reliant Stadium. Buffalo is coming off a disheartening loss to the Tennessee Titans 35-34 at home two weeks ago. Despite losing star middle linebacker Brian Cushing for the season, the Texans look like they have hardly missed a beat and they are still clearly the best team in the AFC not that it much.
My Pick: Houston Texans
Game 10: Minnesota Vikings at Seattle Seahawks
The Minnesota Vikings travel up to the loudest outdoor stadium in football where the 12th man is beyond prevalent at Quest Field to take on the Seattle Seahawks. Elite star halfback Adrian Peterson has bounced back amazingly from an ACL tear not even a year ago, to say the least and it has even shocked and impressed me. That being said rookie quarterback Russell Wilson has looked phenomenal at home by beating teams including the New England Patriots.
My Pick: Seattle Seahawks
Game 11: Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Oakland Raiders
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers looked impressive last Thursday night by dispatching the Minnesota Vikings fairly easily. That can also be said about what Oakland Raiders in what they did to the Kansas City Chiefs, however Minnesota is a far better team so I'm using that logic in battle by the bay.
My Pick: Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Game 12: Pittsburgh Steelers at New York Giants
This is my game of the week by far between two time Super Bowl winners Ben Roethlisberger for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Eli Manning for the New York football Giants. I think the advantage is in the defense, and in this case it's the young lions of the Giants that will expose how paper thin the Steelers offensive line is.
My Pick: New York Giants
Game 13: Dallas Cowboys at Atlanta Falcons
The Dallas Cowboys travel east to take on the unbeaten Atlanta Falcons in the new "Loud Dome". And Dallas lost a heartbreaker last weekend versus division rival New York Giants after wide receiver Dez Bryant caught a pass that looked like the game winner, but his hand landed out of bounds first, so thus he was ruled out of bounds.Matt Ryan is having a MVP type year and I don't see him letting up in this game.
My Pick: Atlanta Falcons
Game 14: Philadelphia Eagles at New Orleans Saints
And finally the Monday night game, between the Philadelphia Eagles and the New Orleans Saints down in the Mercedes Benz Superdome. If you haven't been in or near that stadium, I can tell you it's a sight to see and amazing to think it's 41 years old already. Eagles quarterback Michael Vick and head coach Andy Reid have been in the spotlight with rumors of their demotion for Mr. Vick and termination for Coach Reid. Drew Brees has struggled immensely, however I think he pulls this one out at home.
My Pick: New Orleans Saints
