Are the Denver Broncos the Best Team in the AFC?
Before everyone goes crazy based on the headline; I don’t think the Denver Broncos are the best team in the AFC. It’s difficult to make that argument when they have lost to the Houston Texans and New England Patriots; those two teams have to be considered the favorites in the conference at the halfway point. However, the Broncos have to be considered a legitimate threat to win the AFC at the midway point of the season.
Before the detractors come out of the wood work, let me make a couple of points. Some of you are probably saying they almost lost to the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, how can you say they are one of the best teams? Did anyone watch the Texans on Sunday? They were in a one score game at home versus the lowly Buffalo Bills halfway through the fourth quarter. That’s not to degrade the Texans at all but it does prove the point that even the very best teams are not always going to play their best football. The Broncos beat a desperate Bengals team in their backyard and did it without playing their best football, that’s the sign of a very good team.
Without taking anything away from the Texans or Patriots; the Broncos are a completely different team than the one that lost to those teams early in the season. At this point, Peyton Manning and the Broncos are good enough to lineup and play with anyone in the league.
The second half of the season is going to be fascinating in the AFC; can the Texans continue to play at a high level, can the Patriots do what they always do and can the Broncos continue to get better every week. Maybe the Pittsburgh Steelers will be there at the end but the AFC, at this point, sure looks like a three horse race.
The Denver Broncos are not the best team in the AFC right now, but they might be the most dangerous. They have gotten a little bit better every week and on Sunday they showed a mental toughness in beating the Bengals. In the end, the Broncos may not win the AFC but someone is going to have to knock them out.
