Rex Ryan Voted Most Overrated Head Coach in NFL
In a recent mid-season poll conducted by the Sporting News with 103 NFL players from 27 teams it has been discovered that New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan is recognized as the most overrated head coach amongst the 32 within the NFL.
Ryan received 35 votes coming in first place while one of his AFC East counterparts, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick came in a distant second place receiving 16 votes and Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid finished third with nine votes.
One of the players who placed his vote in the poll, an unnamed AFC offensive player had the following to say about Ryan, “His coaching style is over the top. Some of the things he does in front of the cameras are way over the top. You put that with the New York media and he has a pretty big reputation, I guess.”
In Ryan’s four year tenure as head coach of the Jets he has comprised a regular season record of 31-25 and a postseason record of 4-2. Ryan led the Jets to back-to-back AFC Championship games during his first two seasons in New York (2009 and 2010) however the team went on to lose both games and missed the postseason altogether in 2011. This season the Jets haven’t gotten off to a good start either, putting together a record of 3-5 and seeming as if they are going to miss out on the postseason for a second consecutive season.
One of the things that definitely gets in Ryan’s way as a head coach and why he is looked at as overrated is because prior to each season he makes a bold prediction on camera that the Jets are going to win the Super Bowl. You can’t knock Ryan for having confidence in his team, however to make such a bold statement for everyone to see definitely constitutes in why he is viewed by the majority of the players who took part in the poll as overrated.
