New Orleans Saints running back Chris Ivory has not seen that much playing time this season, as he is the number four running back on the depth chart. However, when Darren Sproles went down with a hand injury, the Saints called upon Ivory to step up, which he did in great fashion.

Ivory led the Saints rushing attack against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday night. The Saints’ ground game had been almost nonexistent all season, but showed some signs of life in week nine. Ivory rushed for 48 yards and a touchdown on a team high ten carries. In addition to Ivory’s rushing yards the Saints also got 44 rushing yards apiece from Pierre Thomas and Mark Ingram. The Saints rushed for 140 yards as a team during their week nine victory against the Eagles.

Even though the ground game had a nice outing, it is still an area of improvement that the Saints must work on. Considering how well Ivory played, the Saints should consider giving him some more carries as he has proven that he is ready when called upon. Week nine was the first action Ivory had seen all season and I think in his lone game he definitely earned some more playing time.

There are reports saying that Sproles could be back next week, but I feel that with Ivory’s performance there is no need to rush Sproles back. The Saints are very deep at the running back position and among Ivory, Thomas and Ingram, the ground game should do just fine if Sproles is set to miss an extended period of time.

Ivory was definitely the unsung hero for the Saints in week nine but his hard work and production did not go unnoticed in my eyes. Ivory is a reliable football player and he definitely deserves to get some more play and the Saints must realize what a luxury it is having such a good number four running back.
