Word out of Kansas City is there are changes coming from the Chiefs offense. The Chiefs are traveling to Pittsburgh for a prime time Monday night matchup against the surging Pittsburgh Steelers. And with the recent changes in the Chiefs coaching hierarchy, it looks like the first place it’s going to show itself is on the offensive side of the football.

In the last week Chiefs head coach Romeo Crennel fired himself so to speak as the Chiefs defensive coordinator and promoted linebackers coach Gary Gibbs to the position. At first his reasons for his weren’t clear, but in recent days there has been talk that he did this because he wanted to make some big changes to the offense.

The Chiefs offense has been dreadful. Statistically they are 3rd in rushing, but they are also 25th in passing and for a team that has not led in regulation all season you understand why those numbers really don’t matter. The offensive line has struggled to protect whomever is under center, and the skill players have not done much to help the cause.

Now with Crennel free from his duties of coaching the defense he has started to attend the majority of the offensive meetings and rumor is he’s wanting to make some big changes that include working in better protections for his quarterback, using star running back Jamaal Charles in more creative ways as well as multi-talented player Dexter McCluster. He is going to expect more of his skill players like Charles and McCluster as well as wide receivers Dwayne Bowe and Jon Baldwin.  If he’s going to leave in an extra protector or even 2, that means 3 in the pattern and those guys will have to work hard to get open.

I applaud Crennel for trying to rally the team at midseason, but this is as much about him keeping his job as anything and it looks to be too little too late. Either way it will be interesting to see if we do see a whole new Chiefs offense this Monday night.
