McKnight, (above ) is one of the best kick returners in the NFL, and he was becoming a bigger factor on offense before he suffered a high ankle sprain during the Jets’ Week 6 win.
Fellow running back Bilal Powell suffered a shoulder injury in that same game, and he hasn’t played since either. McKnight toughed it out and played in Week 7 despite the ankle, but he left the Jets’ Week 8 game after re-injuring it.
Now, as the Jets return from their Week 9 bye, it looks like they are going to hold McKnight out this week, but Powell looks set to return from that shoulder injury, so Shonn Greene won’t have to carry the entire load by himself.
As for McKnight’s kick return duties, reserve wide receiver Clyde Gates is the most likely candidate to fill in this week. He had the best game of his young NFL career in the Jets’ last game, albeit in a losing effort.
The Jets drafted McKnight in the fourth-round of the 2010 NFL Draft, after they deemed fan favorite running back/kick returner Leon Washington expendable following a season-ending injury in 2009.
The Jets would go on to trade Washington to the Seahawks on draft weekend, and now, here in Week 10 of the 2012 season, the Jets will face Washington for the first time, likely without the man they drafted to replace him.
