Big ups to Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Roddy White for not using the “We’re just taking it one game at a time” line. It is a nice thing to say but honestly real fans do not want to hear that. Besides that cliché should be reserved for teams with losing records like the New Orleans Saints or the Carolina Panthers. Sure they both are coming off of wins but they’re still under .500. The whole “We’re taking it one game at a time” cliché is for when you’re trying to turn your season around not when you are 8-0 like the Falcons.
White was asked by a reporter if he believes their team can go 16-0 like the ’72 Miami Dolphins and he responded, “I’m hoping so. I think we have the pedigree to do it…How we are on offense and defense and how we are as a team. The locker room is very united right now. Every week, we expect to win. There is not a team I felt like when we went into a ball game this year that we didn’t feel like we were going to win. I think we can [go undefeated]. We just have to be consistent, don’t turn the ball over and get turnovers…If we continue to do that, we’ll be just fine.”
Some may see this as a brash comment but it is a valid statement, minus White’s improper use of the word “pedigree” but he is having a great year so we will forgive that. Nevertheless, if the Falcons stick to his game plan they should go undefeated. So far, being consistent, creating turnovers without making many has led Atlanta to an 8-0 start. As the old adage goes, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”
Others will take White’s statement and argue they have not done anything in the post season which is true. However, if you think about how Atlanta lost, it was because they made uncharacteristic plays, turned the ball over and did not create any. That being said, Roddy White is right, Atlanta can go undefeated and if they stick with their current formula, they can win a Super Bowl too.
