Cincinnati Bengals WR A.J. Green was talking about the New York Giants defense in a radio interview on WFAN when he made comments that didn’t sit well with Giants S Antrel Rolle. Green said the Giants defense “has a lot of holes in it.”
“I’ll talk with my pads come Sunday. If he sees me, he better duck,” Rolle adamantly stated after hearing of Green’ comments. The Giants pass rush has picked it up a little as of late, but their secondary has certainly given up a number of big plays.
The Giants allow over 260 yards a game through the air and they are ranked 25th in total defense. We can see why Green would say what he said about their defense. Other than an impressive and dominating performance against the San Francisco 49ers, the Giants defense has looked suspect in all of their games.
In his second season out of Georgia, Green is currently seventh in the NFL in catches with 51. However, he is tied with Green Bay Packers WR James Jones with eight touchdown receptions. Green has been Bengals QB Andy Dalton’s favorite target since the two were paired up in the 2011 NFL Draft.
Green may turn out to have a solid game, as he usually does. Does that justify getting the Giants defense fired up? That may mean extra pressure applied to Dalton. The Giants may come out with a more spirited performance defensively.
When it’s all said and done, even if Green ends up having a solid game, his statements may hurt the rest of the offense. The Giants were just informed of how poorly they’ve been playing in the secondary. They want to go out there and prove they aren’t as bad as they’ve been playing this season.
The Giants also know they need this game to avoid another second-half collapse. After this game is a bye, then the Packers. The Giants would like to go into that game 7-3. Rolle would like to go into the bye with a victory. He also wants to put his pads cleanly into Green’s ribs one time.
