Denver Broncos: Defense Adjusts Quickly

The defense for the Denver Broncos turned in another great performance in shutting down Cam Newton and the Carolina Panthers. It didn’t look like it was going to be a good day for the defense as the Panthers drove right down with their second possession to take a 7-0 lead. That would be the last time that the Panthers would get anywhere close to the end zone, the garbage touchdown in the fourth quarter notwithstanding.

There are a lot of areas of the Broncos defense to be excited about but there is one area that does not get talked about at all. For years, if the game plan for the Broncos defense was flawed then it was going to be a long day. That was then and this is now with Jack Del Rio running the defense. Following that Panthers drive in the first quarter, it was obvious that the Broncos made adjustments on the sideline and the offense for the Panthers was done for the day.

The Panthers has some success with a couple of screens early; those quickly went away. The Panthers found some room running the football on their scoring drive; an adjustment was made and they quit trying to run the football. Newton had too much time to throw early in the game; the Broncos pass rush was all over Newton for the rest of the day.

Not every game plan is going to be perfect but if a team can make the right adjustments, then you have a chance to be a very good football team. The Broncos defense is playing great and their ability to make in-game adjustments has been impressive. The fans of the Denver Broncos may not be used to it but the defenses coaches, led by Del Rio, know how to make adjustments and the players know what to do with those adjustments.
