When you’re a high profile team like the Dallas Cowboys, every little rumor is of note. So it shouldn’t surprise anyone that a name was brought up yesterday as a possible replacement if current Cowboys coach Jason Garrett gets fired. The name was Mike Holmgren.
Jason La Confora of CBS Sports reported Sunday morning that Holmgren would have an interest if the Cowboys job were to open up. Here is what La Confora wrote on the subject:
“Jason Garrett obviously has been under duress there for some decision making. But Mr. Holmgren, we recall him from Seattle and Cleveland, has serious interest in that job if it opens up according to my sources. He worked with Jerry Jones for 13 years on the competition committee. They have a strong relationship. And at this stage in his career, Holmgren is not looking for a rebuild. He’s going for a re-tool.”
Holmgren’s name being attached to any coaching job isn’t necessarily news since any successful coach usually has their name pop up from time to time but his name with the Cowboys is especially interesting. Still, I don’t see how it would happen.
Even if Holmgren is looking to get back into coaching, I’m not sure Dallas is the landing spot for him. He may have a good relationship with Jerry Jones but as I continue to mention, Jerry loves Jason Garrett and he’s not going to fire him anytime soon. It would take an epic collapse this year and a complete failure next for Jones to think about replacing Garrett.
For Cowboys fans, the last two names mentioned for the head coaching job certainly are great names and should peak your interest but it just isn’t going to happen. The sooner you realize that, the sooner you’ll stop obsessing over a new coach.
Jason Garrett, whether you believe in him or not, is the Dallas Cowboys coach. Now and for at least the next year and a half, get used to it.
